Why wont anno 1800 free download run without uplay

Now Uplay is making my download Anno AGAIN. What the absolute fuck? Why bother putting your game in another store if you have to use their launcher AND download a game twice just to run it? I'll still play Anno for the weekend but fuck Ubisoft .  · I've clicked on the 'Anno Open Beta' tab in Uplay. Then I scroll down and click the 'PLAY NOW' button. A small screen comes up saying 'Initializing download' and 'View game details'. It sits on this screen pretty much forever. I've left it for hours. Clicking on view game details takes me to the Anno section in the games tab.
